How to activate a Steam key
Find the right redemption screen, check the game edition, and understand what a duplicate-key error means.

Before you activate a Steam key
Check that the listing names Steam as its activation platform. A game’s title alone does not tell you which launcher a code uses. Also check the edition, included content and any region requirements.
For example, SHIDEN’s sample Cyberpunk 2077 and ELDEN RING listings describe base games. Do not assume an expansion is included unless the listing explicitly says so. Check the publisher’s current system requirements before downloading.
A game key and a wallet code have different purposes. If your code adds a money balance instead of a particular game, use the Steam wallet and gift card guide.
Redeem a game key in the Steam client
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that should receive the game. Confirm the account before proceeding.
- Open the Games menu and choose Activate a Product on Steam.
- Follow the prompts and enter the product code in the activation form.
- Review the result, then find the activated game in your library to install it.
Valve documents the activation menu in its instructions for adding a retail game. Adding a non-Steam shortcut to your library is a separate action; use the activation option for a Steam product key.
What to do if activation fails
If Steam reports a duplicate product code, the key has already been redeemed. Valve says to contact the retailer that supplied it; Steam Support cannot replace a retail key. See Steam’s duplicate-key guidance.
For another error, save the exact message and check the platform, edition and region stated on your receipt. Send the seller your order reference and a description of the problem. Keep the full key private instead of posting it in a public review or forum.
